Distances and times are approximate and change with traffic, fog and season.
This page is for families in Delhi who want to hold a wedding in Vrindavan or Mathura without turning it into a week-long trip. It covers how your guests get from Delhi to Braj, a weekend format that suits the short distance, what to organise from home and what we handle on the ground.
Because Vrindavan is roughly 160-170 km from Delhi, most families do not need more than one or two nights away. A pattern we often suggest:
The temple visit on the morning after is often what older relatives value most. The lanes around Banke Bihari get crowded, so we plan an early start.
By road the trip takes roughly 3 to 3.5 hours, depending on traffic and which part of Delhi you leave from. Some households take the Yamuna Expressway; others prefer NH-19 through Faridabad and Palwal. Either way, leave a buffer for weekend traffic leaving the city, and for dense fog in late December and January.
For a large group we suggest guest buses or tempo travellers from one agreed pick-up point in Delhi, rather than twenty separate cars hunting for the venue.
Guests without a car have plenty of rail options: many daily trains run from New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin to Mathura Junction, taking roughly 2 to 3 hours. We meet them at the station for the 12-15 km run to Vrindavan. Relatives flying in from other cities land at IGI and need a normal road transfer, so ask them to arrive a day early. Our hospitality and guest management team handles these transfers and the welcome desk.
Delhi has excellent markets for wedding clothes and jewellery, so most families finish outfit shopping at home. Worth carrying or sending ahead: outfits and accessories, the puja items your family always uses, return gifts.
Better sourced locally: fresh flowers for the mandap and garlands, Mathura peda for sweet boxes, and most decor elements, which our wedding decor team builds at the venue.
One rule surprises many Delhi families: meat and liquor are not sold in the main pilgrimage area of Mathura-Vrindavan, and many venues serve only vegetarian food without alcohol. If a cocktail evening matters to you, confirm with your venue before booking. Also pack warm layers; winter nights in Braj are cold.
Delhi weddings usually have a wide circle of relatives and family friends who will attend the ceremony but not stay over. We set up a separate day-guest schedule: a fixed bus departure from Delhi, lunch timed for their arrival, and a return bus after the pheras or the reception.
Overnight guests get rooms near the venue, and we keep the two lists apart so nobody waits for a room they never needed. If you want help finding a place that handles both groups comfortably, see our venue selection service.
More on how we run weddings away from home is on our destination wedding page.
If you are in Delhi and considering a Vrindavan or Mathura wedding, send your preferred dates and an approximate guest count through the enquiry form or our contact page, and we will come back with a plan for the weekend.
Roughly 3 to 3.5 hours for about 160-170 km, via the Yamuna Expressway or NH-19. Add time on Friday evenings and foggy winter mornings.
Yes, many do. With the ceremony timed for the afternoon or early evening, day guests can travel down in the morning and be back home that night. We plan a separate bus schedule for them.
It works well for guests without a car. Trains from New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin reach Mathura Junction in roughly 2 to 3 hours, and we arrange pick-ups from the station to Vrindavan.
November to February is the main season, though fog in late December and January can slow the drive. Avoid Janmashtami and Braj Holi, and check dates with your pandit. Our guide to the best time for a wedding in Vrindavan and Mathura has more detail.
