Distances and times are approximate and change with traffic, fog and season.
Vrindavan has long had a large Bengali Vaishnav community, so families from Kolkata who marry here often find the town feels less foreign than the distance suggests. On this page we explain the Gaudiya temple connection, the ways Kolkata guests can travel, how to keep your family’s rites intact so far from home, and a three-day plan.
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the saint from Bengal, came to Vrindavan in the early 16th century. His followers, the Goswamis of Vrindavan, built or re-established temples such as Radha Raman, Radha Madan Mohan and Radha Govind Dev, names many Kolkata households know from kirtan at home. We can set aside a morning for these three, with Nidhivan and Keshi Ghat close by, and arrange transport for older relatives who want darshan without long walks. ISKCON Vrindavan is another stop guests often request.
By train, long-distance services run to Mathura Junction, and other options route through Delhi or Agra. It is a long ride, so check schedules well ahead and reserve as one group so the family sits together.
By air, most guests fly to Delhi and drive on to Vrindavan, roughly 3.5-4 hours from IGI depending on traffic. If your airline flies to Jewar, Noida International Airport is much closer; Agra airport is about 70 km away but has few flights, so check current schedules.
In late December and January, dense fog can hold up trains, flights and road travel alike. We build a buffer into the arrival day and keep the welcome dinner flexible. Our hospitality team tracks each group and sends vehicles to the station or airport.
Every Bengali family has its own way of doing things, and those details matter more, not less, at a destination. If you are bringing your family purohit from Kolkata, we coordinate timings and arrangements with him. If not, we help you find a priest in Braj familiar with your family’s rites and put the two of you in touch well before the wedding.
Families usually bring from home the ritual items they have always used, the bride’s and groom’s wedding attire and ornaments, and any gifts or sweets they want from a shop they trust. Make a list with your elders early, since forgetting one small item is harder to fix two days’ travel away.
In Braj we arrange flowers and garlands, mandap and stage decor, caterers and sweets such as Mathura peda. One point to plan for: the sale of meat and liquor is banned in the main pilgrimage area of Mathura-Vrindavan, and many venues serve only vegetarian food without alcohol. If your usual wedding feast includes fish, confirm with your venue what is allowed and plan the menu around it.
November to February is the usual season, but many families avoid Kharmas from mid-December to mid-January, so check with your pandit. Our guide to January and February weddings covers that window in detail.
When you are ready, send your dates and an estimate of guests from Kolkata through the enquiry form or our contact page. Our destination wedding planners will reply with a first outline.
Most either take a long-distance train to Mathura Junction or fly to Delhi and drive about 3.5-4 hours. Check current train and flight schedules, especially in the fog season.
Yes. We help you find a priest familiar with your family’s rites, or coordinate with the purohit you bring from Kolkata.
Radha Raman, Radha Madan Mohan and Radha Govind Dev are linked to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s followers. We can plan a morning around them, with ISKCON Vrindavan as an addition.
Meat and liquor sales are banned in the main pilgrimage area, so many venues are vegetarian only. Confirm with your venue and we will help you build a vegetarian menu your guests will enjoy.
