Distances and times are approximate and change with traffic, fog and season.
This page is for families in Lucknow who want their son’s or daughter’s wedding to take place in Vrindavan or Mathura, in the land of Krishna. It covers the journey west from Lucknow, a two-night format that suits the distance, what to carry from home and what we handle in Braj.
By car the trip is about 380-420 km. Most families take the Agra-Lucknow Expressway to Agra and continue north to Mathura, which works out to roughly 5.5-6.5 hours depending on traffic and stops. Vrindavan sits about 12-15 km beyond Mathura.
That is a full morning on the road, so we suggest guests leave Lucknow early and treat arrival day as a rest day. For a larger group we can arrange buses or tempo travellers from one meeting point in Lucknow, with a planned halt on the expressway.
Rail is the other good choice. Trains run from Lucknow to Mathura Junction, and some guests prefer to travel to Agra and drive the last stretch, which is about 55-60 km. Relatives coming from other cities can fly to Delhi, or check current schedules into Agra, since Agra airport has few flights. Our team meets trains and cars and moves everyone to the rooms.
Because of the long drive, two nights is the format we recommend for Lucknow families:
Some guests like to add a half day in Agra on the way back to see the Taj Mahal. We can plan that as an optional outing with its own vehicle, so the rest of the party is not held up. Our Agra wedding planning page explains what we do there.
Every Lucknow family has its own way of doing things, from the order of rituals to the songs sung by the women of the house. We keep your family’s customs at the centre and fit them around Braj practice, not the other way round. Tell us which rituals matter most and we will build the schedule around them.
One thing to know early: the sale of meat and liquor is banned in the main pilgrimage area of Mathura-Vrindavan, and many venues serve only vegetarian food with no alcohol. If a Lucknow menu usually includes non-vegetarian dishes, please confirm with your venue what is allowed and we will plan a full vegetarian spread that still feels like a feast. Music in open spaces generally has to stop by 10 pm.
From home, bring the things that carry family meaning: wedding outfits and jewellery, puja items your pandit asks for, gifts for relatives, and any special sweets or snacks for the drive. Packed food for the road is a good idea for a five- or six-hour journey, and we can arrange snack boxes and water for each guest bus.
Leave the bulk work to us in Braj. Fresh flowers, marigold and rose garlands, Mathura peda for the mithai boxes, mandap and stage decor, lighting and seating are all sourced locally through our destination wedding service. Our hospitality and guest management team handles rooms, transfers and the welcome desk.
For the season, Nov-Feb is the main wedding period. Nights are cold, so pack shawls and jackets, and keep a buffer for dense fog in late December and January.

It is about 380-420 km. Via the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and Agra the drive takes roughly 5.5-6.5 hours, depending on traffic and halts.
For many families, yes. Trains go to Mathura Junction, or to Agra with a short drive onward, and we arrange pick-ups at either station.
We suggest two nights. The long journey means guests need an easy arrival day before the main functions, and a relaxed morning before the drive home.
Yes. Agra lies on the route home, so we can plan an optional Taj Mahal visit on the last day with separate transport for those who want it.
