Distances and times are approximate and change with traffic, fog and season.
Families in Dehradun and the rest of Uttarakhand often ask us whether a wedding in Vrindavan is practical from the hills. It is, with good planning. Here we set out the travel choices from Dehradun, a format that allows for a long day on the road, and a second idea: holding one function in Rishikesh instead.
By road. Vrindavan is about 400-420 km from Dehradun, and the drive goes via Delhi, taking roughly 7-8 hours depending on traffic. It is one of the longer drives our families make, so we recommend an early start, a proper lunch halt, and arrival before dark. For groups, we can run buses or tempo travellers from Dehradun.
By train. Guests can travel by train via Delhi or via Haridwar and continue to Mathura Junction, a major stop on the main lines with many daily trains. We collect each group from the station; Vrindavan is about 12-15 km from Mathura.
By air. Some relatives prefer to fly from Jolly Grant to Delhi and then drive. From IGI the road journey is about 3.5-4 hours. If your airline flies to Jewar, Noida International Airport sits along the Yamuna Expressway and is much closer to Vrindavan.
For a Dehradun family, Rishikesh is close to home and Vrindavan is a long way off. Some families split the celebration: a haldi, mehendi or engagement near home in Rishikesh for the wider circle, and the pheras in Vrindavan with closer family who are happy to travel. Others keep everything in Braj and treat it as a pilgrimage for the elders.
We plan in both places, so the choice is yours. Our Rishikesh wedding planning page explains what a riverside function there can look like.
With a 7-8 hour journey, guests need a day to arrive and settle. We usually propose:
Garhwali and Kumaoni families each bring their own customs, songs and rituals. We plan the day around what your family does and arrange a local pandit who will follow your family priest’s guidance.
From home, pack wedding clothes, jewellery, the items your family priest lists, and gifts. If the elders like particular food on the road, carry it or tell us and we will add it to the bus snack boxes. Braj winters are milder than Dehradun’s, but nights are still cold in Nov-Feb, so shawls are useful.
In Braj we take care of venue selection, flowers, mandap decor, lighting, mithai boxes with Mathura peda, and vegetarian catering. Please note that meat and liquor sales are banned in the main pilgrimage area of Mathura-Vrindavan, so many venues serve vegetarian food without alcohol; confirm with your venue. Outdoor music generally ends by 10 pm.
Our destination wedding planners coordinate the whole event, and our guest hospitality team handles room lists, transfers from Mathura Junction or Delhi, and a welcome desk at the venue.
